scene
We meet the Kim family and their desperate situation as we see their apartment and how much trouble they have to go to to steal wi-fi.
More family desperation, as they accept street fumigation to kill their pests and the only work the family has is folding cheap pizza boxes.
Ki-Woo tries to persuade the local pizza shop owner to give him a part-time job. They get paid for the boxes.
The family doesn't have the nerve to tell a local street-bum not to urinate on their window. But Ki-Woo's friend Min-Hyuk appears and chases the guy off. Min gives the family the gift of a viewing stone that is supposed to bring prosperity. |
Min offers to set up Ki-Woo in the job of tutor to a rich girl. After some persuasion, Ki-Woo agrees.
Ki-Jung forges papers for Ki-Woo to make him seem like a student and therefore a legitimate tutor.
Ki-Woo goes to the new job as a tutor. It's an awfully nice house. We meet the Parks. Ki-Woo is hired. |
Ki-Woo gives his initial lesson to Da-Hae. He's surprisingly aggressive in the lesson, but it goes well.
Yon-Kyo pays Ki-Woo. Da-Song the boy appears. He's a little monster.
Ki-Woo persuades Yon-Kyo (the mom) that he knows an art teacher who can teach Da-Song.
Ki-Woo tells his sister Ki-Jung that he's got an art teaching job for her under the name Jessica.
Ki-Woo and Ki-Jung come to teach.
Ki-Woo teaches Da-Hae. She's jealous of "Jessica." Ki-Woo reassures her. They kiss.
Ki-Jung insists to be alone with Da-Song. She then starts the lesson.
Yon-Kyo asks her maid Mun-Kwang to go spy on Da-Song and Ki-Jung. But the lesson is one - and Da-Song is behaving well! Ki-Jung pulls out some fake therapy-speak and Yon-Kyo is completely taken in. The father Dong-Ik appears with his driver Yun. Yon-Kyo has Yun take Ki-Jung home. |
Ki-Jung is being driven home. She insists on getting dropped at the train station. She slips off her panties and hides them in the backseat.
The Kim family enjoys a meal at a cheap restaurant.
Dong-Ik finds the panties in the backseat of the car. He and Yon-Kyo think that means Yun is having sex with girls in the car, and possibly giving them drugs. They decide to fire Yun.
Yon-Kyo asks Ki-Jung if Yun misbehaved. She says no, but suggests some bad stuff. Yon-Kyo says they'll fire Yun. Ki-Jung mentions she knows another driver - who happens to be her father.
Ki-Woo and his dad Ki-Tek check out the Mercedes in a dealership, with Ki-Tek taking the opportunity to acquaint himself with the controls.
Ki-Tek gets the job as driver.
The family plots how to get rid of Mun-Kwang, the maid. They decide to set off her peach allergy by covering her with peach fuzz.
Park father Ki-Tek gets a picture of Mun-Kwang in the hospital. In a highly rehearsed speech, he then tells Yon-Kyo, Mrs Park, about what he saw, gets her to believe that Mun-Kwang has tuberculosis.
Ki-Jung uses peach fuzz to get Mun-Kwang to cough. Ki-Tek uses the opportunity to make Yon-Kyo think Mun-Kwang has tuberculosis.
Yon-Kyo decides to fire Mun-Kwang, then does so.
Ki-Tek gives info about a servant hiring service to Dong-Ik, which leads to the hiring of Chung-Sook, the Kim family mother, as the new maid.
Chung-Sook is hired! The Kim family is now all working for the Parks. Da-Song notices that all the Kims smell alike. This is the smell of poverty. |
The Kims are now in relative prosperity. But their smell bothers them. Now the family feels sufficiently empowered to chase off the man trying to urinate on their window. But they're not terribly effective. |
The Park family gets ready to go on a camping trip for Da-Song's birthday.
The Kim family enjoys the Park home in their absence. Then Mun-Kwang, the previous maid, shows up. She says she left something in the basement. |
Mun-Kwang comes in. She goes down to the basement, tries to move a shelf. It's stuck. Chung-Sook manages to move it. Behind it is a secret door to a sub-basement. And down in the sub-basement is hidden Mun-Kwang's husband, Kun-Sae. He's starved - he hasn't eaten since Mun-Kwang was fired. At first Mun-Kwang sucks up to Chung-Sook to try to get her to keep feeding her husband, but then she finds out about the scam the Kims are running and blackmails them into doing whatever she wants. |
Mun-Kwang and Kun-Sae blackmail and abuse the Kims. Then the Kims see their chance and jump the others, leading to a struggle. Then Yon-Kyo calls. The Parks are coming home. The Kims scramble to get things back in order. |
Ki-Tek ties up Kun-Sae and Mun-Kwang.
The Park family returns. Chung-Sook prepares food for them while the other Kims hide.
Mun-Kwang makes a run for it. But Chung-Sook kicks her back down the stairs. Mun-Kwang badly hits her head. Ki-Tek drags her downstairs and leaves her in the basement. Yon-Kyo tells Chung-Sook that her son Da-Song once saw a ghost. |
Ki-Tek locks up Kun-Sae and Mun-Kwang in the secret room.
Ki-Woo is hidden under Da-Hae's bed and almost caught. She then leaves the room arguing with her mom.
The family tries to sneak out, but are forced to hide under the coffee table in the living room. Da-Song, the Park boy, decides to camp out in the backyard. His parents Yon-Kyo and Dong-Ik stay in the living room watching him, trapping the Kims under the coffee table. Dong-Ik and Yon-Kyo start heavy petting on the couch. They also make disparaging comments about the Kim family smell. And Dong-Ik is turned on by the panties left in his car, which were Ki-Jung's. It's incredibly painful for the Kims. |
The Parks are asleep. The Kims slip out from under the table. But Da-Song surfaces, and now Ki-Tek must cower, still on the floor, while Dong-Ik talks Da-Song back to bed. Then Ki-Tek finally scurries away. |
The Kims, except for Chung-Sook (who is supposed to be in the Park house), sneak away.
The Kims leave. Ki-Tek tells them he locked Kun-Sae and Mun-Kwang in the secret room, and he has a plan.
The Kims get home to find it deeply flooded. It's a huge mess.
Mun-Kwang manages to get partially untied. She vomits.
The Kim home is hopelessly flooded. Mun-Kwang appears dead. All is not good at all.
The Kims are among refugees in the school gym.
Yon-Kyo decides to hold a spontaneous party for Da-Song's birthday. She summons the Kims to come to help.
Chung-Sook is dragged into party preparations.
Ki-Tek and Chung-Sook are involved in party preparations.
The party. Ki-Woo feels that he doesn't belong.
Ki-Tek is drawn into pretending to be an Indian so Da-Song can pretend to fight them.
Ki-Jung and Chung-Sook confer about the people under the house. But Yon-Kyo pulls Ki-Jung into being part of the cake part of the party.
Ki-Woo goes to the basement. He's capture by Kun-Sae. Kun-Sae bashes Ki-Woo with the viewing stone.
The party continues as Kun-Sae starts emerges from the basement, gets a knife.
All hell breaks loose. Kun-Sae stabs Ki-Jung. Da-Song has a seizure. Chung-Sook and Kun-Sae fight and Chung-Sook eventually kills him. Ki-Tek, in a fit of rage, kills Dong-Ik. Ki-Tek runs away. |
Ki-Woo wakes up a month later. He and his mom get probation.
Ki-Woo goes to where he can see the house. He sees morse code signals in the lights. He records them.
Ki-Tek's letter in the morse code. He's in the secret room, working to stay alive.
Ki-Woo writes a letter back to his father.
Ki-Woo's letter. His plan is to become rich than buy the house, then let his father back up to the light.

SP: the rage of Ki-Tek
Ki-Tek is the only member of the family who is not good at folding the pizza boxes. (Though this is not as clear in the movie - it is clear in the script.)
Ki-Tek is strongly bothered about the comment about the smell of his family.
In a discussion, Ki-Tek pretends to get angry over talking about his family as cockroaches.
Ki-Tek is showing some anger in the way he ties up Kun-Sae and Mun-Kwang.
Ki-Tek and his children are now hiding under the furniture like cockroaches. He is clearly angry at this. He is particularly hurt by comments about his smell.
Ki-Tek speaks of his hopelessness when he says that there's no point in having a plan.
Ki-Tek is clearly simmering as he helps prepare for the party.
Ki-Tek is angry about having to sacrifice his dignity so a little boy can fight him. His anger is growing.
All of the rage that has been growing in Ki-Tek explodes as he attacks and kills Dong-Ik.
SP: The man in the basement
We get the first hint that Da-Song suffered a trauma. This was seeing Kun-Sae.
When Mun-Kwang is fired, she loses her ability to get to and care for her husband.
Mun-Kwang is here to rescue her husband, who is in the basement.
We meet the man in the basement.
Kun-Sae seems a bit out of it, not quite sane. Not surprising, given he's lived in a basement for over four years.
The ghost was Kun-Sae.
Kun-Sae reveals that he lights the lights to welcome Dong-Ik when he comes home. It's not entirely sane.
His wife's illness affects Kun-Sae.
Kun-Sae is loose and dangerous. He almost kills Ki-Woo.
Kun-Sae emerges in his madness.
Da-Song seizes when he sees Kun-Sae, because Kun-Sae was his ghost. Kun-Sae goes into a violent frenzy, killing Ki-Jung and hurting Chung-Sook before she kills him.
Ki-Tek has now become the man living under the house.
SP: Ki-Woo's romance
Min tells of his intention to romance Park daughter Da-Hae. This sets a seed for the idea that the tutor could marry the rich girl.
Ki-Woo meets Da-Hae.
Ki-Woo and Da-Hae kiss.
Ki-Woo reads Da-Hae's diary. Snooping for romantic purposes? He also tells his family he plans to marry Da-Hae. They're all onboard, more or less. |
Ki-Woo hides under Da-Hae's bed, caught there while putting back her diary.
Da-Hae wants Ki-Woo at the party
Ki-Woo and Da-Hae are kissing a lot now. But Ki-Woo starts to realize he doesn't belong in this world.
Da-Hae tries to carry Ki-Woo out to safety during the bloodbath. She clearly really cares about him.

Notes
Chung-Sook, the Kim-family mother, says of Yon-Kyo, the Park family mother: "She's kindhearted because she's rich... If I had all this, my heart would be overflowing with kindness." This is a key theme of the movie. |
